A holiday at the Berghotel in Sesto means giving up nothing, but that doesn't mean being wasteful.
Our behavior is environmentally friendly and responsible - not a religion, but an attitude!
... which is why we have certified our Berghotel with the South Tyrolean sustainability label and GSTC. We want to be as transparent and open as possible. You will find the same faces every year - people who are there for you with a lot of team spirit, professionalism and joy. No feigned friendliness, but honesty. You will enjoy our great working atmosphere at eye level!
Do you have a special request? Every now and then something can go wrong - please talk to us! Anonymous complaining on the various review portals is of no use to anyone and is not our style. The Berghotel is sustainable, honest, direct and relaxed and please decide before booking whether you don't want to book because of this (e.g. because you want a new bathrobe every day, our meal times don't satisfy you or you expect a stylish mainstream hotel with trained sales staff) or precisely because you can expect a lot of beautiful mountain holidays among people at a very good price-performance ratio.
The Berghotel Sexten in the heart of the Dolomites offers the most beautiful holiday in the mountains, whatever the season.
Sincerely
Your hotelier Walter Holzer
P.S. The Berghotel Sexten is classified as ****s - we don't want to go any further, because certain ecological arguments do not match the ***** standards, e.g. the change of bed linen and napkins, packaging and much more! We want to offer luxury that you can enjoy with a clear conscience.
‘A place for active people in summer and winter who appreciate style and good food, for whom peace and atmosphere are important and who don't like the hustle and bustle.’
We live environmental protection and sustainability - we have been doing this for a long time and not just since it became a trend. For over 20 years, we have consistently focused on the responsible use of resources. What we write below are not just empty words but are lived practice.
Our hotel stands for a sustainable, regional and seasonal way of life. A holiday with us means not having to do without anything, but that doesn't mean being wasteful. For us, environmentally friendly behavior is not a religion, but an attitude that is deeply rooted in our everyday lives.
The Berghotel is a hiking hotel in the mountains, built in the style of the mountains and from the materials of the mountains - stone, wood and glass and insulated with natural wood fiber boards and rock wool. Carpeting only in the corridors, where it makes sense in terms of sound insulation. Solid wood furniture, wooden floors and natural stone were also used in the furnishings, ensuring coziness and sustainability. In addition, many of the hotel's roofs are covered in greenery, which not only blends in seamlessly with the natural surroundings but also promotes biodiversity.
We focus on healthy, natural cuisine that uses high-quality products from the region in order to protect the environment, strengthen the local economy and promote regional cycles.
We don't like plastic. That's why our hotel is practically plastic-free. In the bathrooms and in the SPA you will find high-quality natural products made from mountain pines and Swiss stone pines from the South Tyrolean company ‘Trehs’ in large glass bottles. We do not use the usual plastic waste-generating cosmetic products in small sizes that are thrown away every day.
Sustainability is not just an empty phrase for us, but a matter close to our hearts that we actively live by.
If you have any questions or suggestions about environmental protection in our hotel, we look forward to hearing from you.

Our kitchen works with the highest quality regional, organic and fair-trade products. We use food that still has its own flavor, has been manipulated as little as possible and has not been chemically altered. We achieve this by supporting local cycles, promoting local produce and regional cuisine and cooking according to traditional recipes. We avoid convenience food and only use ready-made products when they make sense. Food that is genetically modified - long shelf life - without vitamins - with additives - flavor enhancers ... at the Berghotel there is no such thing!
We consider the seasonality of the products, as this is the only way to ensure that they are flavorful and retain their nutritional value and that we generate less waste. Herbs are grown in our greenhouse and in summer we add fresh vegetables from our garden. We no longer use water bottles from the shops. Instead, fresh mountain water can be conveniently tapped from our wells.
We source meat from the region, and vegetarians are also catered for. People with intolerances and vegans can help themselves at the buffet. We try to cater to all wishes and needs but would like to point out that we do not specialize in diets or special intolerances.
We treat our food with the same care and attention as we do our environment, i.e. we try to throw it away as little as possible and utilize it as a whole. That is why we are also a member of Slow Food and our ‘Nose to Tail’ concept ensures that the whole animal is used.

‘We serve the best food with the best products we can source. But throwing it away is disrespectful.’
The Berghotel attaches great importance to operating sustainably and conserving resources in as many areas as possible. The energy and water supply are based on ‘clean’ energy sources. Waste is consistently avoided and carefully separated. The Berghotel also focuses on sustainability in the area of transport by strengthening local cycles and enabling guests to enjoy a car-free and climate-friendly holiday in South Tyrol.
The energy supply for our environmentally friendly hotel in the Dolomites comes exclusively from ‘clean’ and renewable energy sources. We use 100% hydroelectricity and heat from wood and reduce energy consumption through excellent thermal insulation of the buildings. 3000 liters of hot water is produced by approx. 70 m² of solar panels, and the heating energy when the sun is not shining comes from the Sesto biomass plant. A new photovoltaic system is also being planned, which will further optimize our sustainable energy supply. The total energy consumption is significantly lower than that of comparable hotels!
Most of the lamps are fitted with motion detectors and there are centralized power-off switches in the rooms, where guests can also make their own contribution. We also use low-energy lamps almost everywhere.
One example of our energy-saving measures is the early introduction of LED lighting, for which we initially invested a lot of money. These long-life lamps consume significantly less electricity, which has already paid for itself after two and a half years. We have also installed water savers for the rooms, which have paid for themselves after just one year as they reduce water consumption and costs.
Our timers on energy-intensive appliances in the kitchen and spa area ensure additional savings, and all this happens without the guests noticing a thing or having to do without anything.
We have been recording and analyzing our annual electricity and heating energy consumption in detail for several years, because only what can be measured can be improved. This systematic monitoring has helped us to significantly reduce our energy consumption over time. Today, we consume significantly less electricity and heating energy than comparable hotels. Thanks to our various measures, we are already saving more than 100 kW connected load compared to hotels of a similar size and equipment and now only consume ± 10 kWh of electricity per guest and less than 20 kWh of heating energy per guest per night. Nevertheless, we will continue to endeavor to become even more efficient, because we are far from finished. The next step is to produce our own electricity!

Various energy-saving measures are implemented in the wellness area. The saunas are switched on between 2 pm and 7 pm. Alternatively, there is a two-person sauna in the garden, which is available 24 hours a day and is ready to go at the touch of a button, so that guests always have the opportunity to enjoy a sauna session. The same applies to the hot pools: they are filled from 7 am to 9 pm. Outside of these times, the hot water flows into well-insulated underground tanks, where the temperature hardly ever drops or is covered with maximally insulated panels. The chlorine in the water is produced from salt, which is gentler on the skin and more environmentally friendly, and no chemicals are used.
We avoid waste and packaging materials as far as possible, rely on reusable systems and keep packaging units large. The rest is carefully separated and disposed of separately. We are fanatical waste separators and residual waste is collected in a maximum of 1 container per week. There is very little plastic in the Berghotel and less and less in the future. That's why we use high-quality natural products made from mountain pine and Swiss stone pine from the South Tyrolean company ‘Trehs’ in large glass bottles in the bathrooms and spa area. At our sustainable hotel in the Dolomites, there is no plastic waste from cosmetic products in small sizes that are disposed of daily.
To avoid traffic and its consequences, we buy as much as possible, as close as possible, thereby strengthening the local economy and promoting local cycles. To further minimize traffic volumes, we order storable products in large quantities with a minimum order quantity of 1,000 euros. This significantly reduces the frequency of deliveries. We have invested in spacious storage facilities specifically for this purpose in order to minimize the use of resources and operate efficiently. The work at the Berghotel Sexten is carried out by local companies and artisans. In this way we produce as little traffic as possible. For our guests, we have created conditions for both winter and summer activities so that our guests do not need a car. It is possible to spend a wonderful holiday at the Berghotel without a car. In both winter and summer, you can hike or ski directly from the hotel - no car is necessary. Our guests also receive free bus tickets for the whole of South Tyrol, so you can leave your car at home. If guests are travelling with an electric car, charging stations are available at the hotel so that your electric car can be charged conveniently and environmentally friendly during your stay.
Help us to protect our environment! Below you will find measures you can take to help reduce our environmental impact at the sustainable Berghotel.
We wash towels, bed linen, bathrobes, napkins etc. when YOU consider it necessary and not at fixed times. In this way we avoid using large quantities of toxic detergents, which is why, for example, a daily change of bathrobe is charged separately.
You will find towels for the sauna in your room and not in the wellness area - this is the only way we can counteract wasteful consumption.
Please bring your own slippers. High-quality slippers are also available for sale at reception for a contribution towards expenses. We do not have single-use slippers.
We reduce the need for detergents that pollute water through the systematic use of dosing systems and biodegradable detergents. You can also help to reduce the use of detergents and water consumption by deciding when your room is cleaned.
The napkin ring also helps to save water, detergent and energy. After dinner, you can decide for yourself whether you want to reuse your napkin the next day. Simply place the napkin in the napkin ring so that you can reuse it the next day. If you do not put the napkin in the napkin ring, you will have a clean napkin for the next day.
‘Around 80 %of guests use this very simple idea and are happy to have saved water, detergent and energy!’
Place your tableware on the small cutlery tray during dinner so that it stays at the table for the next course. This will help us to wash 70% less cutlery over the course of the year and thus save water and energy. A similar principle applies to glasses: wine glasses are only provided when you actually want to drink wine.

The Berghotel is proud to be certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The GSTC certifies particularly sustainable businesses in the tourism industry and helps to establish a standardized understanding of sustainable tourism. Four areas - sustainability management, socioeconomics, culture and ecology - are assessed so that accommodation providers, catering businesses and destinations can demonstrate their progress towards sustainability.
The Berghotel was the first business to be awarded the ‘South Tyrolean Sustainability Label’ level 3. South Tyrol's destinations and businesses have recently been rewarded for their commitment to sustainable development. Certain criteria must be met in order to receive the certificate in accordance with an internationally recognized standard. The Berghotel has always attached great importance to sustainability, regionality and quality.
We are also a member of Change Maker Hotels, a network that focuses on shaping a sustainable future so that our guests can enjoy their holiday with a clear conscience and a good feeling.
The Berghotel is built and furnished in the same solid and traditional way as it is run. Respectful use of resources, sustainability in all areas and responsibility towards people and nature. The Berghotel’ s philosophy is based on 4 pillars, which are also reflected in our logo:

An intact nature is the basis, therefore we care for it and deal with it in an attentive way. We live on a spot where we can drink out of rivers and where the air we breath could not be better. We want it to stay like this! The Nature Park Drei Zinnen - Tre Cime and the Unesco Worldheritage Dolomites garantee for this
Environmental protection - sustainability - throwing away as little as possible ... we've been doing this for a long time, and not just since it's hip and recommended for marketing purposes. What we write in the following lines, we not only say, but have consistently been doing it for more than 15 years. We are not able to document everything up to the last consequence. If the information is not complete enough, please ask questions x mail, or even better personally during your next stay

that means the we act how we talk. We live every day this philosophy in our private life and in the Berghotel. Real hospitality and not a faked smile, no selling tricks or pressure the staff to sell. Easy going atmosphere, a bit laid-back and if something goes wrong, we will not panic but resolve it. A place for all generations. And every day we try to do our best!
Healthy products from the region, if out of season also from longer distances, the rest we buy from small farmers we know personally – trust, responsability and quality without compromises! No food from global players – what does not grow in Europe we buy fair trade!
There is no Fast Food at the Berghotel, also no Convenience Food and ready to go dishes. We use local and biological products and support small regional circuits with consequence.
Maybe how understood that at the Berghotel we really care what kind of food we buy, especially the quality of the ground product. On that we can become pedantic - for this is responsable our chefs Andrea, Pietro and Hubert, our service team and sommeliers Stefan, Matthias and Max and last but not least chief Walter
At the Berghotel time passes slower. We don´t like rush, stress and unnecessary pressure. Peace, cosiness, a genuine ambience, large glass facades, comfortable reading armchairs… You can slow down and recharge your batteries.
