In the heart of the Dolomites, at 2.000 meters, lies Prato Piazza, a beautiful high plateau with magnificent views of the surrounding mountain massifs such as Picco di Vallandro and Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Cristallo and Tofane. Thanks to its integration into the Fanes-Sennes Braies Nature Park, the landscape of the high alpine pasture is characterized by unspoilt nature and naturalness.
Whether summer or winter, Prato Piazza is an Eldorado for sports and nature lovers at any time of year. In summer, the sunny high plateau is the ideal place for hikes and mountain bike tours. In winter, it is just as easy to get around on foot as it is on touring skis or snowshoes. Prato Piazza is particularly popular with cross-country skiing enthusiasts.

Prato Piazza is also known as the panoramic terrace of the Dolomites. And for good reason, as the high plateau offers an extraordinary view of the surrounding mountains such as the Picco di Vallandro, Monte Cristallo and Cristallo group, Helltaler Schlechten, the Fanes group with Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo and the Tofane. But it's not just the view that is enchanting: extensive & idyllic meadows with a variety of rare flowers and plants adorn the grounds.
The Picco di Vallandro (German: Dürrenstein) is a 2,839-meter-high mountain in the Braies Dolomites. It rises in the mountain ridge between the Braies Valley and the Valle di Landro Valley and is part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. From the summit of the Picco di Vallandro you have one of the most beautiful and extensive panoramic views in the entire Dolomites: Tre Cime di Lavaredo & Sesto Dolomites and the Cristallo Group to the south.
The Monte Specie (German: Strudelkopf) is a 2,307-meter-high panoramic mountain in the Braies Dolomites. It rises between the Braies Valley and the Valle di Landro Valley, just south of the Picco di Vallandro and is accessible all year round, very scenic and easy to reach. From the summit of the Monte Specie you have a magnificent view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Prato Piazza has something for everyone. Whether hiking, mountain biking, Nordic walking or simply going for a short walk: Prato Piazza is a paradise for summer activities. There are numerous hikes on the Prato Piazza for leisurely walkers and families, but it is just as popular as a starting point for high mountain tours.

There are three categories: The original long route (110 km and 2,740 meters in altitude) leads from San Candido to Prato Piazza, the Tre Cime Nature Park and the Marchkinkele, past Dobbiaco and Cortina d'Ampezzo. The medium route (91 km and 1,870 meters in altitude) omits the Marchkinkele and takes around two hours less, while the short route (73 km and 1,258 meters in altitude) also omits Dobbiaco and Prato Piazza.
Prato Piazza also has a unique charm in winter and is known as a winter paradise. It is the ideal place for excursions with snowshoes, touring skis and sledges. The Picco di Vallandro and the Monte Specie in particular are popular destinations for winter hikers and ski tourers.
A beautiful alternative to the Prato Piazza is the winter hike starting from the Ponticello car park via trail no. 18. The trail leads secluded and slightly uphill to the high plateau and then you can speed back down on a sledge. Free sledge hire at the Berghotel.
