During the First World War, Monte Piana (2.324m) served as the scene of intense battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops due to its strategic location. Between 1915 and 1917, around 14.000 soldiers lost their lives there. Even today, remains of the war positions, trenches and war footbridges can be seen on the mountain. The mountain offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks such as the Three Peaks and the Sesto Dolomites, the Cadini Group, the Mount Cristallo and the Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo.
Monte Piana is a ridge in the Valle di Landro north of Lake Misurina, on the border between the provinces of South Tyrol & Belluno. Along the road Cortina – Dobiaco.
Monte Piano is the nothern summit and was occupied by Austria. Monte Piana is the southern summit and was occupied by Italy. Monte Piano (the north summit) stands on the plateau mountain Monte Piana.
During the First World War, the front line ran directly along the hilltop of Monte Piana, where today there is an interesting open-air museum. Near the Rifugio Bosi hut, at the Heroes' Chapel, the hiking trail starts to the individual points of the open-air museum. Tunnel entrances, bomb craters, troop bases, barrel trenches and trenches remind us of that sad chapter in history. The entire hike takes between 2,5 and 4 hours and sometimes leads over exposed sections with rope safety (sure-footedness, the exposed parts can be avoided by using alternative paths). Otherwise, the circular route is relatively easy, as it is mostly flat.
On foot from Lago d'Antorno | total walking time 4-5 hours | easy On foot from Lake Landro in the Valle di Landro | total walking time 6-7 hours | difficult Jeep shuttle service: the road from Misurina up to Monte Piana is closed, but a shuttle service has been set up to the Rifugio Bosi hut. The shuttle runs from June to the beginning of November at regular intervals daily between 09.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.
Steeped in history, the mountain offers a magnificent scenery and spectacular views at the 3 Zinnen and the Monte Cristallo.
