6. Border trail along the Karnische mountains

Description of the way

We take the funicular Monte Elmo (2041 m) and start with our excursion eastwards on way nr. 4 past the Hahnspiel Hut (2150 m) and the Sillianer Hut (2447 m). On the way you can see the Three Peaks at the other side of the valley with the Mount Paterno. Our path takes us to the Hochgrubengipfel (2537 m) and the Obermahdsattel (2470 m) where you can go down to the Klammbach Alp and futher on to the Berghotel. We proceed on the path marked with number 403, pass the Hornischeck (2550 m), the Hollbrucker Spitze (2581 m) and the Hochgräntenjoch (2429 m). We arrive at a little cemetery of WW I. where is the possibility to take path nr. 14 to the Klammbach Alm. Our path follows the nr. 403 to the Demutspitze (2591m), Schöntalhöhe (2634 m) and last the peaks of the Eisenreich (2665 m). Here comes a sign to descent on your left to the Obstansersee Hut (attention you need almost 1 hour going down and up). Our path brings us down on nr. 160 to the Passo Silvella and nr. 146 to Malga Nemes Hut (1.877 m). We walk home on path nr. 13 and 139 passing Gasthaus Froneben to the Berghotel.
Variant 1: After the Sillianer hut you can descent on path nr. 134/133 to the Klammbach Hut and from there back to the Berghotel on path nr. 13 and the Mühlensteig or nr. 139 – walking time 4-5 hours
Variant 2: (absolutely beautiful) more or less 1 hour after the Sillianer Hut at the little cemetery there is another possibility to go home earlier by taking path nr. 14 on our right, arriving also at the Klammbach hut (managed hut) home then like in variant 1. – walking time 5-6 hours

Advices and suggestions

A long walk with no difficult, absolutely beautiful because of the views, a continuous up and down with many remainders of World War I. Half the way is in Italy and half the way is in Austria.
