Cortina d'Ampezzo is located in the heart of the Venetian Dolomites and is one of the most famous and renowned winter sports resorts in the world. Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1932, 1941 and 2021.
There is no certain date for the birth of Cortina. However, it is known that the first traces of activity date back to the Mesolithic period thanks to the discovery of a mummy. It was a hunter who was buried in the Mondeval area, which made it possible to date the human presence in these areas to at least 6000 BC. In 1156, Ampezzo appears in the first official document. It has been called Cortina d'Ampezzo since 1900.
A special feature is the Regole of Ampezzo, 11 in total, which are institutions of family communities that manage forests and pastures and have their roots in the oldest history of Cortina.
Then, in 1956, with the Olympic Games, everything changed: many houses were sold to people ‘from outside’, with the result that today about 80 % of the houses are no longer owned by the Cortina population and are only inhabited for a few weeks a year.
BY CAR
Cortina is 40 km from the Berghotel and the journey takes about 45 minutes. There are several car parking spaces available in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Just for visiting the center there is parking near the ice stadion and near the old train station.

BY BIKE The cycle path from Dobbiaco to Cortina leads through the Valle di Landro along the old railway road and is very beautiful. A wonderful day trip by bike or e-bike! aprox 90 km two ways
The ‘Conca di Cortina’ - the Cortina basin is extremely extensive and stretches from the Falzarego/Valparola Pass in the west, to the Passo di Cimabanche in the north, the Tre Croci Pass in the east and the Giao Pass in the south.
By car, drive to San Candido and continue to Dobbiaco, then turn left into the Valle di Landro. Pass Lago di Dobbiaco lake and Lago di Landro lake and continue to Carbonin and on to Cimabanche. From there it is another 14 km to Cortina d'Ampezzo. A total of 45 km & journey time approx. 45 minutes.
By bike, take the cycle path to San Candido and continue to Dobbiaco and turn left there. The tour continues southwards, first on the tarmac municipal road and then on a forest path. Passing Lago di Dobbiaco lake and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, you reach Lago di Landro lake and then Carbonin. In the middle of two nature parks, the Tre Cime Nature Park & the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, the cycle path leads slightly downhill along the old railway line through dark tunnels, past abandoned railway stations and over spectacular viaducts and leads directly to Cortina d'Ampezzo. 90% of the route is unpaved - from Dobbiaco approx. 300 meters in altitude and it takes approx. 2 hours.
Cortina d'Ampezzo is located at 1,224 meters above sea level in the province of Belluno, around 15 km from the provincial border with South Tyrol. In addition to Italian, the majority of the population in Cortina speaks fluent ‘Ampezzano’, a local variant of Ladin.
The center of the town is the ‘Corso Italia’. Whether fashion or handicrafts, antiques or jewelry, textiles or furnishings - this promenade will make your shopping heart beat faster.
Cortina is also home to an airport, the ‘Aeroporto di Cortina d'Ampezzo -Fiames Sant'Anna’. The airfield was closed for a long time but has been used commercially again as a heliport since 2011.
The Cortina d'Ampezzo ski resort plays an important role in the twelfth film of the James Bond spy series ‘For Your Eyes Only’ from 1981.
With more than 4,000 square meters of exhibition space, ‘La Cooperativa di Cortina’ is the most important shopping center in the Dolomites.
The museum was inaugurated in 1974 following a donation from the Regole d'Ampezzo by Rosa Braun, the widow of Mario Rimoldi, a collector from Cortina d'Ampezzo. The museum was one of the most important collections of 20th century art in Italy.
The parish church was built in 1775 under the direction of the architect Promperg. The church tower was completed between 1851 and 1858 and is now one of the symbols of Cortina.
The Olympic Ice Stadium was built between 1952 and 1955 for the 1956 Winter Olympics. The ice hockey and figure skating competitions were held there.
The Folklore Museum was the former administrative center of the entire Ampezzo region and is divided into three sections. It provides an insight into the activities of the rural population in past centuries.
Beautiful hotel - great location with fantastic views. Ideal family hotel, nice wellness area. Excursions in the surrounding area are very varied, whether to Austria, Cortina or hiking... The food is fresh, varied and diverse ...and finally something slightly bizarre: the shower gel with Swiss stone pine oil is awesome :)

Surrounded by the highest mountains in the Dolomites - the Antelao to the east, Monte Cristallo and Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo to the north, Monte Pelmo to the south and the Tofane to the west - the Cortina basin is an Eldorado for all mountain enthusiasts.
Three peaks dominate this impressive chain: Tofana di Rozes, the front Tofana also known as Tofana de Fora (3,225 m), Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), the highest peak in the center, and Tofana de Inze, the rear Tofana also known as Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m). The Tofane stretches westwards from Cortina d'Ampezzo and north-westwards from San Vito di Cadore between the Passo Falzarego and the Val di Fanes.
At an altitude of 3,221 meters, Monte Cristallo is the highest mountain in the Cristallo group in the Dolomites. It is located north-east of Cortina d'Ampezzo and is part of the ‘Faloria-Monte Cristallo-Mietres’ ski area, which in turn is part of the ‘Dolomiti Superski’ ski carousel.
The 3,148 m Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo is the highest peak in the Braies Dolomites. It is located directly on the border between South Tyrol and Belluno, the Italian part of the name d'Ampezzo refers to the local village of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Due to its brittle rock and exposed sections, the Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo is considered the most difficult three-thousand meter peak in the Dolomites.
There is hardly a place where there are as many opportunities to experience the mountains as in Cortina. Hiking, biking, via ferratas, climbing tours, motorbike tours - the possibilities are almost endless. We will leave out the glitz and glamour here, but a stroll through the pedestrian zone and a visit to the legendary ‘Cooperativa di Cortina’ is a must at the end of a tour in Cortina.
CINQUE TORRI The Cinque Torri rock formation is undoubtedly Cortina's most famous and historically significant climbing crag. The rock towers have a height of 2,200-2,360 meters and are located at the foot of Monte Averau and Monte Nuvola.
BÉCO D’AJÁL The climbing crag is located north of the Croda da Lago massif in a magnificent panoramic position and consists of three mighty boulders 60 to 80 meters high..
PICCOLO LAGAZUOI AND SASS DE STRIA Two crags on Passo Falzarego, suitable for beginners and children, with routes from 4a to 7b.
When you ride through the Dolomites on a motorbike, you ride through a unique landscape that captivates countless motorcyclists with its beauty every year.
The Passo di Falzarego is one of the most famous passes in the Dolomites and one of the favorite places for bikers thanks to its picturesque, winding road and impressive passages. It lies at 2,105 meters above sea level and is one of the main access routes between Val Badia and Val di Fassa.
The Passo di Valparola pass road is also a popular destination for motorcyclists. The marvelous views of the Dolomites and the surrounding valleys are unique and offer an impressive experience. The road itself also offers a demanding challenge for experienced riders. The pass road connects Val Badia with Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Cortina is the ideal place for winter sports enthusiasts. With its breathtaking winter landscapes, it is recognized as a place of exceptional beauty and has earned a worldwide reputation for its sporting history. Whether tobogganing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, snowmobiling or freeriding - Cortina also offers countless sporting opportunities away from the ski slopes. The ice rink in the Olympic stadium is also open to the public all year round.
Tradition, top ski events and a film-worthy backdrop in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site make Cortina d'Ampezzo the glamorous ski resort that VIPs love. The Stratofana ski slope, known as the Olimpia delle Tofane, is one of the most beautiful and famous ski racecourses in Italy (length approx. 2.4 km). One of its most striking features is the Tofana shot, a very steep slope framed by a rocky massif. The Sellaronda can also be reached from Cortina d'Ampezzo: via the Falzarego Pass, on to the Valparola Pass to San Cassiano and following the signs to Corvara.
Also worth mentioning is the “Freccia nel Cielo” cable car in the area of the ice stadium (northern part of the village). Take the cable car up to the Ra Valles station (2,470m).
A very scenic trail leads from the Nordic Arena in Dobbiaco to Cortina, through the Valle di Landro valley past Lago di Dobbiaco lake, along the old railway road including the view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The entire route is free of difficulties and can be mastered by any cross-country skiing enthusiast without any problems. The return journey is by bus.
Cortina offers around 70 kilometers of trails through the magical world of the Ampezzo Dolomites Nature Park. Experienced cross-country skiers will enjoy the technically demanding trail at the Tre Croci Pass.
The XXV Olympic Winter Games will take place from 6 to 22 February 2026 under the name ‘Milan-Cortina 2026’. Cortina will host several disciplines: in addition to the women's alpine ski race, the curling competitions will also take place there. The Olympic flame will also be lit in South Tyrol in 2026: the biathlon stronghold of Antholz will be the venue for the biathlon competitions. Other venues will be: Milan, Valtellina, Verona and Val di Fiemme.
The Christmas market in Cortina d'Ampezzo takes place in the center, in Corso Italia. The supporting program of the Christmas market in Cortina also includes the opening of the Advent calendar at the historic Palazzo, the former town hall building. Every day, a window is opened to the rhythm of music and an art installation with a Christmas theme is unveiled.
